What are porcelain veneers?

One fast method to improve your smile and conceal crooked, chipped, stained, or decayed teeth is to be fitted with porcelain veneers by Dr. Luke Riley at Riley Dental. Cosmetic veneers are light covers, created with porcelain, that are secured to the front of the teeth to enhance the overall look of your smile. For patients with thin enamel, or teeth whose enamel has eroded away due to acid exposure or vigorous brushing, porcelain veneers not only restore your smile to its natural beauty, they strengthen the teeth. Dr. Riley uses a minimal-prep veneer method to keep your teeth strong, eliminate post veneer sensitivity, and obtain a natural look that can last for years. Our veneers are placed using the latest in bonding technology to maintain color and blend seamlessly with your natural teeth. Using veneers, Dr. Riley can aid in improving the size, color, length, or shape of your teeth. Schedule a consultation at our Haslet, TX dental practice to find out more information about veneers and decide if they're appropriate for your goals.

Who is a Candidate for porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers may be used to mask stains and chips in your teeth, improve worn-down or misaligned teeth, and fix teeth that are poorly spaced or shaped. At Riley Dental, your porcelain veneers will be custom created to fit snugly over your teeth for an appealing and natural look. At your consultation, Dr. Riley will listen to your desires and concerns so he can personalize your procedure. He will also determine whether you're a good candidate for porcelain veneers by checking the total health of your mouth. If you have symptoms of periodontal disease, this will have to be addressed first to ensure your veneers last decades and look and feel natural. If you routinely grind your teeth or clench your jaw, Dr. Riley may suggest an alternative to veneers. Dr. Riley creates his veneers custom for you, based on your smile shape, face shape, and jaw shape.  Your smile makes you unique.  It only makes sense that when correcting a smile we give you back the uniqueness and beauty that is individual to you!

What To Expect when getting porcelain veeneers

Our process for veneers consists of 4 appointments, each one designed to ensure we achieve your desired results.

Your first appointment should last about 30 minutes. You will have an initial consultation to discuss your desires and goals.  Impressions and photographs of your teeth and smile will be taken. Using these impressions and photos, Dr. Riley will sculpt temporary veneers for you based on your individual face shape, smile shape, tooth shape, and bite.

At your second appointment, Dr. Riley will transfer the temporary veneers onto your teeth using vacuum-forming material. This allows you to preview the final results before we ever touch your teeth. We encourage you to take photos of your new smile at this appointment or to bring a friend or family member to help with your decision-making process.

Dr. Riley will then discuss different options with you regarding your veneers, including color and what you like or dislike about the temporary veneers he made for you. Your temporaries will then be removed, and you can leave with confidence that the outcome of your final results will be phenomenal.

At your third appointment, Dr. Riley will prepare your teeth by removing less than 1 mm of your tooth enamel and gently reshaping it to receive the veneers. This allows room for the porcelain to strengthen your teeth and enhances the bond technology so we can achieve long-lasting, natural results. A new set of custom made temporary veneers will be placed on your tooth or teeth, which you will wear for two weeks in order to get used to how they look and feel. During this time, Dr. Riley encourages you to provide feedback on your feelings and desires for any last minute adjustment to the shape, feel, and color of your final veneers.

At your fourth appointment, Dr. Riley will remove your temporary veneers and, using the best in composite and porcelain bonding technology, place your final veneers on your teeth.

Two weeks after the placement of your final veneers, you will return to Riley Dental for your follow-up appointment. Dr. Riley will check your final results and the health of the gums around the veneers, and he will begin making your nighttime protection appliance to ensure your new smile will last for years.

How long is Recovery after getting porcelain veneers?

Because getting veneers normally doesn't require anesthesia, you ought to be able to continue your daily tasks following your appointment. You might experience sensitivity to cold and hot meals for a couple of days, but that should fade away. Veneers should be cared for just like your own natural teeth with regular flossing and brushing. While cosmetic veneers are stain resistant compared to natural teeth, you still need to stay away from staining drinks and food to keep your veneers white. To prevent harming your veneers, you shouldn't chew on hard objects, like your fingernails or ice. Continue to schedule dental examinations and cleanings at Riley Dental so that we can track the condition of your porcelain veneers, teeth, gums, and general oral health. Dr. Riley will tell you if your cosmetic veneers need to be replaced or repaired.

Does Insurance Cover porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are an elective treatment, so they're usually not paid for by dental insurance. Riley Dental does take many payment options, such as third-party financing via CareCredit, to make your veneers more affordable. At your consultation, we will personalize your treatment to meet your needs and budget. We will also discuss a quote for your veneers and explore your payment choices.

Porcelain veneers FAQs

Do you still need to brush your teeth with veneers?

Porcelain veneers require the same care as your natural teeth. Dr. Riley recommends brushing twice a day with a soft bristle brush and flossing daily. Even though veneers are made with durable materials, it's best to avoid biting down on hard objects like pens or ice. Remember to come in for cleanings regularly so we can make sure your veneers stay healthy and strong.

How long do veneers last?

If cared for properly, most porcelain veneers can last between 10 – 20 years. Of course, the life span of your veneers depends on many factors, including how well you take care of them. Patients should do their best to avoid eating sticky, chewy food and grinding their teeth at night. Our team at Riley Dental can make adjustments to your porcelain veneers as needed.

What causes discoloration of veneers?

Over time, veneers can develop stains and discoloration. Many factors can cause these changes, such as smoking or drinking coffee, tea, or red wine. The food and drinks you consume play a major role in the shade of your smile. Patients in Haslet, TX, can reduce this risk by brushing their teeth or rinsing their mouth out with water after consuming staining food or drinks.

Can you get veneers whitened?

No. Porcelain veneers cannot be whitened with professional or at-home whitening treatments. For this reason, it is essential to adhere to a proper oral and dental hygiene routine in addition to avoiding staining foods and beverages. Still, patients should have some peace of mind in knowing that porcelain veneers are naturally very stain resistant.

Can I get a single dental veneer?

Yes, it is certainly possible to place a single dental veneer, and Dr. Riley can help to match it as closely as possible to your natural teeth. However, the most pleasing and seamless look can typically be achieved by applying veneers to multiple consecutive teeth.

Will veeners damage my real teeth?

Dr. Riley understands the importance of maintaining as much of your natural tooth structure as possible and takes great care to minimize the amount of enamel that needs to be removed in preparation for your veneers.
